Drumstick Rasam

Description: This is a rare rasam made with the pulp of drumsticks.
Preparation Time: 25 mins


Fresh Drumsticks – 10 medium size
Redgram dhal water – 2 cups
Tomato –1 big (chopped)
Green Chilli – 1 slit
Coriander leaves – 2 tablespoons (chopped)
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Mustard seeds – 1 Teaspoon
Cumin seeds – ¼ teaspoon
Turmeric Powder – ½ Teaspoon
Asafoetida Powder – ½ Teaspoon
Ghee – 2 Tablespoon
Salt To Taste

Fresh grated coconut – 3 tablespoons
Cumin seeds – ¼ teaspoon
Pearl Onions(small onions) – 5 (chopped)
Green Chilli – 1
Sambhar Powder – 1 teaspoon
Grind the above ingredients to a smooth paste using a little water.


1.Cut the drumsticks into 2″ pieces and boil in salt water till tender.
2.Once cooked scoop out the pulp taking care not too many seeds are there.
3.Mix the redgram dhal water,drumstick pulp, chopped tomato,slit green chili,turmeric powder,salt,asafoetida powder and the ground paste and allow it to simmer on a low flame.
4.When the raw flavor is gone and the mixture boils remove it from the fire.
5.Heat the ghee in a pan and add the mustard seeds, when it crackles add the cumin seeds,curry leaves and the coriander leaves and pour over the hot rasam.
6.Serve hot.
